Delirium is a serious medical condition that requires prompt medical attention. Delirium is more common in older adults, occurring in 2.6 million people in the United States over the age of 65. The associated cost is estimated to be over $160 billion annually.

Target Audience

This course is geared towards clinicians. For non-clinician health system employees, please exit this course and complete the course titled "4Ms Delirium for Non-Clinician Health System Employees." Once the course is complete, you will be asked to complete a post-test and evaluation before receiving a Continuing Education Certificate.

Learning Objectives

After completing this course, which is geared towards clinician health system employees, learners will be able to:

  • Define and distinguish between three types of delirium
  • Recognize ways in which delirium can present differently in older versus younger adults
  • Take simple steps to manage or prevent delirium
  • Discuss ways to assess for delirium
  • Recognize high-risk medications
  • Use non-pharmacologic measures for prevention and management of delirium Incorporate extended recovery into discharge planning
